Tradition Redefined: The Larry and Brenda Thompson Collection of African American Art
April 23 -August 29, 2010
This extraordinary private collection presents 72 works by African American artists that document the many expressions of the African Diaspora. The strength of the Thompson’s collecting process is their attention to artists who have typically not been recognized in the traditional narratives of African American art.  In addition to the acknowledged “masters” with artists such as Ratcliffe Bailey, Romare Bearden, David Driskell, and Mildred Thompson, the Thompsons have collected works by artists who have been labeled “emerging,” “unknown,” “outsider,” “eccentric,” “vernacular,” “regional” and more.  The result is a collection that redefines the landscape of American art, offering a more in-depth, inclusive understanding of African American artists and their aesthetic and social concerns.

Jazz ABZ: An A to Z Collection of Jazz Portraits by Paul Rogers and Wynton Marsalis
January 20 –
August 8, 2010
The Jacksonville Jazz Festival has partnered with the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens for an amazing exhibit of illustrations from Jazz ABZ: A Collection of Jazz Portraits with poems by Wynton Marsalis and illustrations by Paul Rogers. Artist Paul Rogers teamed with legendary jazz musician Wynton Marsalis to create the book Jazz ABZ, which highlights, through poetry, jazz greats from A (Louis Armstrong) to Z (Dizzy Gillespie). Each portrait and poem is evocative of the particular musician's sound, and each work of art alludes to song titles, artifacts, and other markers of the time, including artistic references to well-known artists who were particularly inspired by jazz music. This is a must-see for jazz fans of all ages.
Artist Paul Rogers will appear during the festival for book signings and exhibit tours.
